Kreuzeck

The Kreuzeck is a striking mountain in the heart of the Kreuzeck range in Carinthia. Three ridges fan out from its summit, reaching north-east to the Polinik, east to the Salzkofel and south to the Hochtristen. The mountain’s top marks the meeting point of the municipalities of Reißeck, Stall and Greifenburg. Two main routes lead to the summit. From the Feldnerhütte at 2,188 metres, hikers climb 520 metres in about an hour and forty minutes. The path first follows the Kreuzeck Höhenweg westwards, then turns left at Glenktörl and ascends the southern ridge in zigzags. The second route starts at a car park near Speicher Wölla at 1,530 metres, follows a forest road for 7.5 kilometres, then climbs 1,200 metres over more than seven kilometres to the same ridge. At the foot of the peak stands the Feldnerhütte, an alpine club hut with nine beds and thirty mattresses plus a heated winter room. A private guesthouse, the Alpenheim, sits lower in the Teuchltal at 1,200 metres, offering another place to rest before the final climb.
