Kreuzeck group

The Kreuzeck Group is a mountain range in the Central Eastern Alps, forming part of the High Tauern chain. It lies between the Drava and Möll valleys in Carinthia and Tyrol. The range covers about 450 square kilometres and is mainly made of gneiss and garnet-mica-schists. The highest peaks are the Mölltaler Polinik, Striedenkopf and Hochkreuz. The Iselsberg Pass near Lienz marks its western end. The Kreuzeck Group is sparsely populated and used mostly for forestry and hunting. In recent years tourism has grown, with the Reißeck-Kreuzeck hydroelectric power plant bringing visitors to the area. Water from several reservoirs in the range feeds the plant run by Verbund. The range is classified with the Rieserferner group, Villgraten Mountains and Schober group as the southern front of the High Tauern. A visitor finds a quiet mountainous landscape with forests, reservoirs and high peaks. The Möll and Drava valleys provide access to the range. The Reißeck-Kreuzeck power plant’s reservoirs add to the scenery. The Iselsberg Pass offers a route into the western part of the range. The area is known for its geology and alpine environment.
