Glen Etive

Glen Etive is a narrow valley in the Scottish Highlands, stretching about 18 kilometres from the Kings House Hotel at its head to Loch Etive. The River Etive flows through the glen, fed by streams from Rannoch Moor, and meets the sea at the loch. Two mountains, Buachaille Etive Mòr and Buachaille Etive Beag, stand at the northern end like guardians. Other peaks such as Ben Starav and Beinn Fhionnlaidh rise nearby, adding to the dramatic scenery. The glen lies within the Ben Nevis and Glen Coe National Scenic Area, one of Scotland’s protected landscapes. The glen’s wild beauty and challenging waters draw visitors and adventurers. The River Etive is famous for its Grade 4(5) white-water kayaking, with steep drops and powerful rapids. A herd of red deer lives here, often seen near the road that winds down the valley. Local farms and houses line the route, offering glimpses of rural Highland life. The area also holds a place in myth, linked to the Irish heroine Deirdre and the Fachen, a dwarf of legend. Glen Etive has served as a backdrop for films like *Braveheart*, *Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix*, and *Skyfall*. The road follows the river through the valley, passing farms and open moorland. Walkers can explore paths beside the water or climb the surrounding peaks. The landscape remains rugged and unspoilt, though littering has become a concern. Its mix of natural drama and cinematic fame makes it a place of enduring appeal.
