Lady's Rock

Lady’s Rock is a small, uninhabited skerry in the Inner Hebrides, lying south-west of Lismore in Argyll and Bute. At high tide it disappears beneath the waves, leaving only a navigation beacon above water. The nearest land is Eilean Musdile to the north-east, close to Lismore. The rock’s name comes from an old tale of betrayal and survival. In 1527 Lachlan Maclean of Duart tried to kill his wife, Lady Catherine Campbell, by leaving her stranded on the rock at low tide. He returned to Duart Castle believing her dead, but she had been rescued during the night by a passing boat from Tayvallich or Lismore. Maclean later arrived at Inveraray Castle with a coffin, only to find Lady Catherine waiting for him. Visitors to the area can see the skerry at low tide when it emerges from the sea. The surrounding waters are calm and clear, offering views of Lismore and nearby islands. The navigation beacon stands as a quiet reminder of the rock’s dangerous tides and its place in local history.
