Eilean Musdile

Eilean Musdile is a small, low-lying islet in the Inner Hebrides, lying just a quarter-mile from the larger island of Lismore. It sits at the entrance to Loch Linnhe, where CalMac ferries pass close by on their route from Oban to Mull. The islet covers only ten acres of grassy rock, with no trees or buildings except for the lighthouse. Its name comes from the Gaelic for ‘island of the musk ox’, though no such animals ever lived there. The surrounding waters are busy with shipping, making the light vital for safe passage. A single standing stone once marked its highest point before the lighthouse was built. The lighthouse was designed by Robert Stevenson and completed in 1833 at a cost of £4,260. It originally showed a fixed white light, guiding vessels into Loch Linnhe at night. In 1910 most Northern Lighthouse Board beacons switched to modern Fresnel lenses, but Lismore’s light remained a rare catoptric type. A nine-foot standing stone once stood on the island, aligned to mark the midwinter sunset. This monolith was removed during the lighthouse construction, leaving no trace today. Nearby, the skerry of Lady’s Rock lies just to the south-west, a hazard for unwary sailors. Visitors to Eilean Musdile see a simple grassy islet dominated by the white lighthouse tower. The island has no dock or path, so landings are rare and carefully planned. The lighthouse itself is a sturdy stone building with a lantern room at the top. From the water, its light can still be seen guiding ships through the narrow sound. The surrounding sea is often choppy, with waves breaking over the low rock. The view across to Lismore and the hills beyond makes the short crossing worthwhile for those who do land.
