Church of All Saints, Wootton Courtenay

The Church of All Saints stands in the quiet Somerset village of Wootton Courtenay, its red sandstone walls catching the light of the surrounding Exmoor landscape. Built in the 13th century, it replaced an earlier church given to a priory in the 12th century. The nave, chancel and four-stage tower survive from that time, their Hamstone dressings adding contrast to the local stone. In the 15th century a new roof was added and a north aisle built, while a century later the porch was rebuilt and the tower raised higher. Much of the woodwork inside was carved by local craftsmen, giving the interior a handmade feel. The church holds a 15th-century iron-bound chest once used to secure valuables, and its stained glass dates from the 19th century. A major restoration in the 19th century addressed earlier damage, though the roof had to be replaced again in 1964 after beetle attack. Outside, an early 15th-century cross stands in the churchyard, its calvary replaced in the mid-19th century. The building remains part of a larger benefice that includes several nearby parishes within the Exmoor deanery. Visitors find a simple nave and chancel, their pointed arches and medieval roof timbers still in place. The iron-bound chest sits near the altar, its sturdy locks a reminder of past security. The stained glass throws coloured light across the walls, while the tower rises above the village rooftops. The churchyard cross, weathered by centuries, marks the spot where villagers once gathered. The surrounding countryside stretches out beyond the gravestones, linking the sacred and the rural.
