Church of St Petrock, Timberscombe

The Church of St Petrock stands in the Somerset village of Timberscombe, its 15th-century tower rising above a building mostly rebuilt in 1708. The chancel still shows work from about 1450, while fragments of the nave walls may belong to an earlier structure. Above the south door a painted figure of David survives from the Protestant Reformation period. Inside, the 15th-century font and a 17th-century pulpit remain in place. The church honours Saint Petroc, who is thought to have visited this parish in the 6th century. English Heritage has given it Grade I listed status, recognising its special architectural and historic interest. Its tower, added early in the 18th century, contains a ring of eight bells. The building belongs to the benefice of Grabbist Hill, which includes four parishes across the Exmoor deanery. Visitors find a quiet country church set among the rolling hills of Somerset. The tower offers views over the surrounding countryside. Inside, the mural of David above the south door draws attention, while the old font and pulpit show the building’s long history.
