Kirche zum gekreuzigten Heiland

The Church of the Crucified Saviour stands on the grounds of Graz Central Cemetery, a large burial ground in the city. Built in the late 19th century in red brick with a Gothic Revival style, it was designed by architect Carl Lauzil alongside other cemetery buildings. Originally a mortuary chapel, it later became a parish church before serving the Serbian Orthodox community from the late 20th century. The church’s architecture is notable for its nearly square floor plan and a tall double-shell dome flanked by two smaller domes. Inside, the transition to the dome is decorated with figures of the four Evangelists, while the high altar features a depiction of the Saviour. The sandstone ciborium beneath the dome is a key feature of the interior. After over a century of exposure to harsh weather, the brick exterior required extensive restoration completed in 2021. Visitors find a quiet, solemn space within the cemetery grounds, where the church’s central position draws attention. The surrounding cemetery is laid out symmetrically, with the church at its heart. The interior offers a sense of reverence, with its brick walls, arched windows, and carefully restored details. The connection between the church and the cemetery adds to the atmosphere of reflection.
