Sea organ

The Sea Organ stands on Zadar’s waterfront in Croatia. It is an architectural sound art object built into a set of wide marble steps that descend to the Adriatic Sea. The design was created by architect Nikola Bašić as part of the city’s coastal redesign project called Nova riva. After the Second World War, much of Zadar’s seafront had been rebuilt as a plain concrete wall. Bašić’s work transformed this space into a place where visitors can experience music created by the natural movement of the waves. The organ plays harmonic sounds through a hidden system of polyethylene tubes and resonating chambers beneath the steps. When waves enter the tubes, air is pushed through and produces random but melodic tones. The installation was opened to the public in April 2005 and quickly became a popular attraction for both tourists and locals. In 2006, it received the European Prize for Urban Public Space, awarded jointly with another project. Nearby, Bašić also designed the Monument to the Sun, a circular installation that lights up at night. Visitors walk down the white marble steps to reach the water’s edge. The steps are arranged so that the waves flow beneath them, creating a continuous, ever-changing concert of sound. The area around the Sea Organ is open and inviting, with space for people to sit and listen. The sound blends with the sea breeze and the view of the Adriatic, making it a place where architecture, nature and music come together.
