Soldiers of Oxfordshire Museum

The Soldiers of Oxfordshire Museum stands in Woodstock, a town on the edge of the Cotswolds north of Oxford. It occupies part of the grounds of The Oxfordshire Museum, reached through that building’s entrance. Colonel Robin Evelegh and Colonel Tim May led the effort to create the museum, which opened in 2014. The Evelegh Gallery is named for Colonel Evelegh, who inspired the project. A £3.2 million fund paid for the new building, opened by the Princess Royal. The museum honours soldiers from Oxfordshire regiments and presents their history. Its displays cover the county’s military past in clear, accessible ways. Visitors find uniforms, medals, weapons and photographs arranged chronologically. Panels explain the role of local units in major conflicts. The collection recognises both officers and ordinary soldiers who served. Inside, the Evelegh Gallery focuses on the county’s First World War contribution. Other rooms show artefacts from earlier centuries of soldiering. The setting beside The Oxfordshire Museum lets visitors combine two local collections in one visit. The building sits on the edge of Woodstock, with easy access to the town centre.
