Schloss Hainrode

Schloss Hainrode stands on the edge of Bleicherode in the rolling hills of the Hainleite range, northern Thuringia. The site began as a small fortified farm called a Vorwerk in the 12th century, later becoming a knightly estate under the von Bila family after 1531. Only in the 18th century did the present three-building complex take on its grander palace-like form. The estate’s history is tied to the nearby Wöbelsburg hillfort, whose earthworks still crown the ridge above the valley. After the von Bila line was dispossessed in 1945, the Schloss served as a state-run children’s home until 1997. Today it belongs to a Dutch family who have restored the buildings and surrounding grounds. Visitors arrive at a courtyard framed by the main house and two wings, all dressed in pale plaster and slate roofs. Behind the buildings a park of lawns and mature trees slopes down to meadows and mixed woodland. The quiet setting offers long walks along woodland paths and views across the Wipperaue valley.
