Castle Wernrode

Schloss Wernrode is a former knight’s estate in the village of Wernrode, a district of Bleicherode in northern Thuringia. The site sits beside a small pond that may once have been part of a moat, and a quiet landscape park extends for 2.3 hectares. Nearby hills still carry the ruins of old fortifications such as Burgruine Sargberg and Burg Straußberg, reminders of the region’s medieval past. The oldest parts of the complex date from the 12th century, but the main manor house was built around 1603 in plain Renaissance style. Its steep slate roof is punctuated by four small dormers and corner turrets capped with pyramid roofs. Inside, the ground-floor ceilings retain their original stucco work. A polygonal chapel wing projects from the south side, and a round stair tower rises at the west end. The park wall is built of local sandstone and contains weathered relief panels, including a 1603 heraldic tablet showing the Jagemann and Steckel alliance arms. A circular motte in the park marks the site of an earlier hilltop castle about 22 metres across. Opposite the manor stands the village church, its walls once adorned with Renaissance memorials. The entire estate, with its manor, farm buildings and park, is protected as a cultural monument.
