Denkmal für die Märzgefallenen (Eisenach)

The March fallen memorial stands in Eisenach, a town in Thuringia. It marks the violent deaths of five workers on 18 March 1920 during the Kapp Putsch. A low wall of roughly 1.5 m high bossed sandstone carries a central stone plaque listing the names of the victims. The monument recalls the night of 16 March 1920 when a military patrol arrested five citizens near the Hohen Sonne wood. Next day a soldier was disarmed in the city, prompting an armed detachment to search the Frankfurter Straße. When a disturbance broke out during the arrest, soldiers opened fire and threw hand grenades, killing five and wounding others. Visitors find a quiet spot in the street with the low memorial wall and plaque. A small area in front holds wreaths for mourning. The simple stonework and the names of August Gustav Schmidt, Friedrich August Voigt, Heinrich Adolf Niemeier, Emil August Volkert and Karl Emil Mengel remain the focus of remembrance.
