Parish Church of the Assumption of Saint Mary, Ħal Għaxaq

The Parish Church of the Assumption of Mary stands in the village of Għaxaq in Malta’s southern region. Built in the 18th century, it replaced an earlier church first recorded in 1511 and became the parish church when Għaxaq was established as a parish in 1626. The present structure was designed by architect Sebastian Saliba and its main works were completed by 1760, with consecration taking place in 1784. The church is built in local limestone and follows a Latin cross plan crowned by a central dome. Its symmetrical façade is framed by two bell towers and a broad staircase leading to the entrance. The church holds a notable collection of sacred art and devotional objects. The titular statue of the Assumption, carved in wood by Mariano Gerada in 1808, is a key work among its holdings. Another important statue is Our Lady of the Rosary, carved by Xandru Farrugia in 1823, who trained under Gerada. The interior also features works by the Milanese firm Fratelli Bertarelli and Maltese artists including Carlo Darmanin and the Camilleri Cauchi family. Paintings by Francesco Zahra, Gio Nicola Buhagiar, Rokku Buhagiar and Emvin Cremona further enrich the church’s artistic legacy. The parish church is central to Għaxaq’s religious and cultural life. It hosts several confraternities, including the oldest, the Confraternity of the Most Holy Sacrament, and the wealthiest, the Confraternity of the Most Holy Rosary. The titular feast of the Assumption on 15 August is one of Malta’s principal village feasts, marked by processions and festivities. The church also plays a key role in Holy Week, with processions featuring statues of the Passion of Christ. Other processions include Our Lady of the Rosary in October and Saint Joseph in June, reflecting the parish’s ongoing traditions.
