Palais Cumberland

The Palais Cumberland stands in the 14th district of Vienna, Penzing, on Penzinger Straße. It is a grand baroque building that once housed royalty and now serves as the Czech Embassy. Three separate houses once occupied the site before Emanuel Teles de Silva built a palace there in 1745. The building’s history includes royal residents like Prince Karl von Lothringen and King Georg V, who fled to Vienna in 1866. After his death, his son expanded the estate with a neogothic castle in Gmunden. The site’s garden was once an exercise ground for Maria Theresia’s cavalry barracks, demolished in the 19th century. Today, the palace hosts the Czech Embassy and the Max Reinhardt Seminar, a renowned acting school. The architecture reflects its layered past, from baroque elegance to neogothic influences. The surrounding area blends imperial history with modern diplomacy.
