Breitenberg

Breitenberg is a hill rising 545 metres above sea level in the Palatinate Forest, near the villages of Sankt Martin and Maikammer in Rheinland-Pfalz. It is a subpeak of the Kalmit massif, the highest mountain in the Palatinate Forest, and lies within the Palatinate Forest-North Vosges Biosphere Reserve and the Palatinate Forest Nature Park. The hill is entirely wooded and sits on the eastern edge of the Haardt range, giving it a prominent appearance above the Upper Rhine Plain. It is connected to other subpeaks such as the Stotz, Taubenkopf and Kanzel by gentle saddles and ridges. The Breitenberg’s summit is 1.3 kilometres northwest of Sankt Martin and 3 kilometres west-northwest of Maikammer. The hill is a popular destination for walkers because of its clear views over the surrounding countryside. A car park for hikers lies northwest of the summit, close to the Kalmithöhenstraße, a road that crosses the highland and forms part of Landesstraße 515. Routes to the top start from Alsterweiler, a village in Maikammer, from Sankt Martin itself, or from the valley of Sankt Martin. The exposed position of the Breitenberg means that the views from the summit stretch far across the Upper Rhine Plain. The wooded slopes provide shade and shelter for walkers on warm days. Visitors find a quiet, forested hilltop with few buildings and no crowds. The summit area is reached by gentle paths that wind through beech and oak woods. From the top there are wide views eastwards over the plain towards the Rhine and westwards into the Palatinate Forest. The contrast between the dense woodland and the open plain below makes the Breitenberg a peaceful place for a short hike or a longer walk along the ridge. The nearby Kalmithöhenstraße offers easy access for those who prefer to drive part of the way before walking. The hill’s position on the edge of the range gives it a sense of openness while still being surrounded by forest.
