Christ Church

Christ Church stands on the eastern side of Turnham Green in Chiswick, a Grade II listed Anglican church designed in the Gothic Revival style. The church and the green form local landmarks recognised for their historic interest by the London Borough of Hounslow. Sir George Gilbert Scott and his partner William Moffatt designed the building, which was completed in 1843. The church was commissioned in 1841 to serve the growing population of Turnham Green, as walking to St Nicholas Church by the Thames became inconvenient. The Church Building Commissioners contributed £500 towards the £6,900 cost under the Church Building Act 1818, making it a Commissioners' church. The church’s architecture has been praised since its completion. In 1887, the chancel was extended and given a square eastern end under architect James Brooks. The Ecclesiologist journal described the tower and spire as “peculiarly excellent, and worthy of any ancient architect” in its 1841 edition. A re-ordering in the early 1990s removed the pews, replacing them with chairs, and the floor was concreted and carpeted. In 2000, the west bays were converted into two-storey community rooms by architect Ian Goldsmith. Visitors find a church set within the green, a public open space in west London. The interior now features chairs instead of pews, with a carpeted floor. The two-storey community rooms occupy the west bays, adding modern use to the historic structure. The square-ended chancel, added in 1887, frames the altar area. St Alban’s Church, restored in 2016, lies on the green’s northern edge and forms part of the Christ Church ministry. The green itself remains a local landmark, offering a quiet space near the church.
