Cultural heritage D-1-7640-0088 in Oberbergkirchen

Schloss Oberbergkirchen was a small medieval and early modern manor house in the village of Oberbergkirchen, set in the rolling farmland of the Mühldorf am Inn district. The site appears on Bavaria’s list of archaeological monuments as the remains of a Hofmarkschloss, a noble estate tied to local rule. Written records first mention Oberbergkirchen as a Hofmark seat in the 15th century. The Paumgartner family, a Regensburg patrician clan, held the estate around 1490. By the mid-17th century the Fränkinger family had become the local Hofmarksherren. In 1759 the countess Maria Josefa von der Wahl, lady of nearby Schloss Zangberg, took over the open Hofmark. The present village grew up around the vanished Schloss, whose buildings were probably erected in the first half of the 17th century. After the countess’s death in 1807 without heirs, the estate passed into other hands. In 1820 the entire Schlossgut was demolished, leaving only the memory and the earthworks behind. The site is now a quiet grassy rise just north of the parish church, its former moat long since filled in. Visitors walk through Oberbergkirchen’s quiet streets and see the church standing on the spot once occupied by the Schloss. The gentle slope where the manor house stood is marked only by a low rise and a few mature linden trees. The village itself preserves the layout of the old Hofmark, with farmyards and cottages arranged around the church. A modest stone cross near the church gate recalls the noble families who once ruled here. The surrounding fields stretch away to the Inn valley, giving a sense of the open landscape in which the Schloss once stood.
