The remains of Salmanskirchen stand on gentle slopes above the river Isen in Ampfing. A medieval stronghold once crowned the site, later rebuilt as a Renaissance palace with moats and outbuildings. The Upper Schloss, now the parish house, rises two storeys under a pitched roof with carved cornices from the 18th century. The site witnessed turbulent centuries of ownership. In 1166 a local knight acted as witness to a monastery gift, and by 1203 the Pfäffinger family held the open estate. After a fire in 1463 Genteflor Pfäffinger moved the seat downstream and created a larger complex with a pond. Conflicts over religion followed when Hans Jordan introduced Lutheran preaching in the 16th century. Today two structures survive. The Benefiziatenhaus, a baroque parish house, occupies the former Upper Schloss. Nearby the Schloßhäusel, a two-storey wing on an earthen mound, marks the palace’s flank. Both are listed as medieval and early modern archaeological monuments. The quiet village churchyard overlooks the terraced slopes where the old moats once lay.
