Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park

Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park covers 1,865 square kilometres in the southern Highlands, just north of Glasgow. It stretches from green lowlands in the south to rugged mountains in the north along the Highland Boundary Fault. The park contains Loch Lomond, Britain’s largest lake by surface area, and 21 Munros including Ben Lomond, the most southerly Munro. It also includes the Trossachs, a wooded region of glens and lochs popular with visitors from nearby cities. The park is divided into four sections: Breadalbane, Loch Lomond, The Trossachs, and Cowal, each offering different landscapes and activities. The park attracts nearly three million visitors each year who come for scenery, wildlife, walking, climbing and water sports. It protects habitats for over 200 bird species and a quarter of Britain’s plant species, including red squirrels, golden eagles and reintroduced beavers. The islands of Loch Lomond hold unusual wildlife such as red-necked wallabies on Inchconnachan. Conservation efforts focus on native woodlands, which cover about seven and a half per cent of the park, and the Great Trossachs Forest national nature reserve. Visitors find well-marked paths through wooded glens and open hillsides with views across lochs and islands. The A82 road follows the loch’s western shore, passing Ben Lomond and leading north to Fort William. The West Highland Line railway runs along the eastern shore of Loch Long, offering scenic journeys close to the Arrochar Alps. In Breadalbane, steep mountains like Ben More provide challenging climbs, while Cowal’s Argyll Forest Park offers quieter woodland walks. The park’s mix of accessible routes and remote ridges makes it suitable for all levels of outdoor interest.
