Cultural heritage D-2-7338-0108 in Rottenburg an der Laaber

Rahstorf lies on a gentle rise beside the Kleine Laber in Rottenburg an der Laaber. A ring-shaped hollow still marks the spot where a wooden tower once stood on an earthen mound. The site was later crowned by a timber manor house, but by the early 18th century it had become unsafe and was pulled down. Today a farm occupies the raised ground, its barns and houses hiding the vanished castle beneath. Ludwig Greul, the first recorded lord of Rahstorf, appears in a deed of 1388 witnessed by the parish priest of Andermannsdorf. The Greul family bore a shield with two roses and held offices in nearby Leyerndorf and Wetterfeld. In 1459 Michael Greul sold the estate to Dr Georg Pollner, mayor of Landshut. The von Asch family followed around 1526, and their small fortress is shown on Apian’s land map. A shallow depression still traces the old moat around the vanished mound. The farm’s outbuildings stand on the same artificial height, their walls rising where the wooden hall once sheltered the Greuls and their successors.
