Schloss Eberstall

Schloss Eberstall stands in the village of Eberstall, part of the municipality of Hohenthann in Lower Bavaria. The site is protected as both a listed building and an archaeological monument. Beneath its lawns and outbuildings lie traces of earlier medieval and early modern structures. A Bruno de Eberstal appears in records from 1120, showing the place has been occupied for nearly nine centuries. The present building was erected early in the 18th century but has since been altered. The castle’s history is written through the names of its successive owners. Konrad von Eberstall pledged service to Duke Ludwig in 1286. The Schweibrer family held the estate from 1434 until 1578, followed by the Krimels until 1676. Later owners included Franz Albrecht Schrenck von Notzing and Maria Franziska von Spitz. By 1780 Theodor Reichsgraf von Morawitzki had become lord of Eberstall, keeping it in his family into the 19th century. Today the former Schloss is a plain two-storey house with a steep roof, needing renovation. Its quiet setting among farm buildings and gardens shows little of the medieval activity below ground. The modest exterior gives few hints of the long line of owners whose stories lie buried in local archives.
