Old Dalquharran Castle

Old Dalquharran Castle stands as a ruined tower house beside the Water of Girvan in South Ayrshire. The site occupies a strong defensive position on the river’s north bank, about 100 m north of the village of Dailly. The earliest record appears in a 1474 charter of Crossraguel Abbey. Gilbert Kennedy built the original tower, later enlarged into a larger castle in the 1670s. By the 19th century the newer Dalquharran House took over as the main residence, leaving Old Dalquharran to decay. The castle’s thick walls, nearly two metres wide, once protected a narrow rectangular building measuring 18 m by 2 m. After the 1679 expansion it gained battlements and a small turret on the north-west corner. Old Dalquharran remained in use until at least 1904, though only fragments survive today. The ruins show how the Kennedy family adapted their home over centuries. Its isolated riverside setting adds to the atmosphere of quiet decline. Visitors find grass-grown mounds and crumbling stone walls marking the tower’s outline. The riverbank path offers views of the Water of Girvan and the surrounding farmland. Dailly village lies just south of the site, providing a contrast between the castle’s past grandeur and present rural life. The scheduled monument status protects what remains for future generations.
