Baltersan Castle

Baltersan Castle is a ruined L-plan tower house near Maybole in South Ayrshire, Scotland. It stands close to Crossraguel Abbey on land once linked to the Kennedy family. The present tower was begun in 1584 for John Kennedy of Pennyglen and his wife Margaret Cathcart. The castle was abandoned in the mid-18th century and has remained a ruin ever since. It was first listed as a Category B building in 1971 and upgraded to Category A in 1995. The site is recorded on the Buildings at Risk Register for Scotland. The castle’s history includes Egidia Blair, Lady Row, who died there in 1530 and is buried at Crossraguel Abbey. The lands passed to the Kennedys in 1574, and the tower became part of a wider Kennedy estate. Major Thomas Kennedy of Baltersan is recorded in the 1680s, and the line ended in 1721. Captain Hugh Arbuthnot, a Kennedy cousin, was the last known inhabitant before the castle fell into ruin. Visitors find a three-storey tower with thick walls and ashlar angle-turrets at the corners. The ground floor contains the kitchen and cellars, and the stair-wing leads to a first-floor hall. Gunloops in the turrets show its defensive past. The site lies within agricultural land near Maybole, with Crossraguel Abbey close by. The castle’s masonry reveals it was once a fine fortified laird’s house rather than a simple defensive structure.
