Deutsches Stuhlmuseum Eimbeckhausen

The Deutsches Stuhlmuseum stands in Eimbeckhausen, a village in the Deister-Süntel hills near Bad Münder. The building once housed the Wente & Söhne furniture factory. The museum tells the story of the region’s chair industry, which began in 1820. Eimbeckhausen even has a chair in its coat of arms and is nicknamed the ‘chair village’. Several chair factories once flourished here during the Industrial Revolution. Today only the office-furniture maker Wilkhahn remains in the village. Visitors see a wide range of chairs, tools and documents that show how chairs were made in factories. The exhibits cover the work of joiners, turners, weavers, upholsterers, stainers and polishers. Each craft brought a different skill to the process of chair production. Written records and photographs add detail to the story of the industry. The museum keeps alive the memory of an important local trade. Inside, the old factory spaces now display chairs from different eras and styles. Workbenches and machines show how the furniture was shaped and finished. Outside, the quiet village sits among wooded hills. A short walk leads to the Deister ridge, where the raw timber once came from. The museum offers a clear picture of how a whole region built its living on a single piece of furniture.
