Burghügel bei Messenkamp

The Burghügel bei Messenkamp is a small ruined lowland castle of the motte type near the village of Messenkamp in the Schaumburg district of Lower Saxony. It stands in the Niederung of the Rodenberger Aue, about 600 metres south of the village. A straightened stream runs along its northern edge, and the surrounding ditch, now filled in, can still be traced. The mound rises up to 3.5 metres and measures roughly 18 by 28 metres. Made of piled earth and marl, its surface is uneven and pitted by animal burrows. No stonework or finds have ever been recorded, and no traces of an outer bailey have been noted. Local historian Ludolf Parisius suggested the site once hosted a Gogericht first mentioned in 1369, though no medieval written record of the castle itself survives. The mound is today covered with tall conifers and dense shrubs. It appears on Prussian survey maps around 1900 and was only identified as a castle site in 1968 by an archaeologist from the Niedersächsisches Landesmuseum Hannover. The lack of excavation means its origins remain uncertain, yet the earthworks still hint at a once-defensive place in the quiet valley landscape.
