Cultural heritage D-2-7339-0297 in Postau

Schloss Grießenbach stands in Grießenbach, a village within the municipality of Postau in Lower Bavaria. The site is marked as an archaeological monument, showing traces of medieval and early modern buildings beneath the ground. These remains include parts of older structures and demolished sections of the former castle. The castle belonged to the Grießenbeck family, who took their name from the place after rebuilding it following the destruction of nearby Hahnreuth Castle in the 12th century. In 1280 the family sold most of the property to Seligenthal Abbey, which kept upper ownership until 1721. During the Thirty Years’ War Swedish troops damaged the castle in 1634 and again in 1648, but it was restored each time. After regaining the estate, the Grießenbecks held a small court there until the mid-19th century. Today the remains lie south of the Mettenbach–Postau road. The former castle chapel is now the parish church of St. Stephanus. An old engraving by Michael Wening shows an early-18th-century single-storey building with a steep roof, surrounded by a wall and farm buildings, mostly wooden.
