Schloss Fuchsmühl

Schloss Fuchsmühl stands in the village of Fuchsmühl in the Tirschenreuth district, on the eastern edge of the Steinwald forest in Bavaria’s Upper Palatinate. The site is listed as an archaeological monument, with traces of medieval and early modern buildings beneath the present structure. It also appears in the heritage register as a protected building in Fuchsmühl. The castle’s history begins in the 12th century, when it was known as a knightly and feudal estate called Fossenmühl. By the 14th century it had a simple walled enclosure with a gate tower topped by a pyramid roof. In 1752 the south side was extended with the Schlosskapelle Mariä Opferung, restored in 1820. The chapel has a rectangular plan, five bays, a barrel vault with lunettes and wall pilasters. Its ceiling paintings and altar date from 1752, in the Rococo style. The south wall holds the tombs of Daniel von Froschheim and his wife, marked with their marital coats of arms. Today the castle grounds include the classical main building, the manor house and the chapel. To the west lies a farmyard with outbuildings and a brewery. To the east and south stretches a landscaped park with ponds and a gardener’s house. The complex reflects centuries of change, from medieval origins to later expansions and 20th-century conversions.
