Castell Nant y Garan

Castell Nant y Garan stands on a low mound in Llayfriog, Ceredigion, a simple medieval earthwork without the usual surrounding bank. Built between the late 11th and mid-12th centuries from local soil and stone, it was surrounded by a ditch. The Normans introduced this style of fortification from France, and the Welsh soon adopted it. The site is listed by Cadw and carries the SAM code CD052. It belongs to a group of similar mounds scattered across the Welsh borders. The largest concentration lies in the old Marches, including Shropshire, Cheshire, Herefordshire, Powys and Flintshire. Visitors find a grassy mound rising gently above farmland, with no visible stonework. The ditch that once defended the site has largely silted up. From the top there are wide views over rolling Ceredigion countryside. The place is quiet, with only the sound of wind and distant sheep.
