Castell Pistog

Castell Pistog stands in a quiet field near Llangeler in Ceredigion. It is one of the many small earth-and-stone mounds built in Wales between the late 11th and the late 12th century. Unlike larger castles it has no outer defensive wall, only a low mound and a surrounding ditch. The Normans brought this style of fortification from France and Welsh lords soon copied it. Cadw keeps the site on its list of scheduled monuments under number CD103. The mound is small and grassy, barely rising above the surrounding farmland. A single mature oak grows on top, its roots gripping the old earthworks. The ditch is still visible as a shallow hollow around the base. No buildings or ruins remain above ground, so the site looks much as it did eight centuries ago. It is one of the best-preserved examples of its kind in Ceredigion. Visitors can walk around the mound on grassy paths. From the top there are wide views over rolling green fields and distant hedgerows. The silence is broken only by birdsong and the occasional tractor. The site is easy to reach along a farm track but sees few visitors, giving a sense of stepping back into the Middle Ages.
