ARC Theatre & Arts Centre

ARC is a modern arts centre in Stockton-on-Tees, standing where Nelson Terrace and Dovecot Street meet. The building has five floors and a full-height glass front that shows the three-level foyer from the road. Inside are four venues: a 246-seat theatre, a 99-seat studio theatre, a mixed space called The Point, and a 127-seat cinema. There are also exhibition areas, meeting rooms, a café and two bars. The centre is run by an independent trust called Stockton Arts Centre Limited. The centre opened in 1998 after being built in 1997 with £6.85 million from the National Lottery. It replaced older arts facilities and won a Civic Trust Award in 2001. The artwork Over Easy, designed by Richard Wilson, is part of the building’s design. After financial difficulties, the centre closed in 2001 and reopened in 2003 under new management. It now receives support from Arts Council England and Stockton Borough Council. Visitors find a lively programme of theatre, dance, music and film across the four venues. The Point hosts large events with standing and seated spaces. The foyer’s glass walls let light flood the levels below. The café and bars provide places to meet between shows. The centre also takes part in festivals like the Stockton International Riverside Festival and Christmas in Stockton. Links with local colleges and universities bring students into the building.
