Georgian Theatre

The Georgian Theatre stands in Stockton-on-Tees, a Grade II listed building dating from 1766. It is one of the oldest surviving Georgian provincial theatres in England, converted from a tithe barn. The theatre sits in the town’s Cultural Quarter, approached through Green Dragon Yard. Its gabled pantiled roof and cobbled passage give it a historic look. A lean-to structure at the southern end and an adjoining cottage add to the site. The cottage once served as a drawing room for actors before performances. The theatre has hosted many well-known performers over the years. Acts such as Arctic Monkeys, Sam Fender and Chrissie Hynde have appeared on its stage. The Tees Music Alliance now manages the venue, programming live bands, jazz, folk and plays. Local artists feature heavily in its regular shows. The Stockton Weekender festival, held each summer, draws large crowds to the town. A studio opposite the theatre provides space for recording and rehearsals. Inside, the theatre has modern toilets and dressing rooms added during a 2007 refurbishment. A new bar area and heating system were also installed at that time. The exterior and nearby Green Dragon Studios received improved lighting and signage in 2008. The surrounding yards now offer better leisure space for visitors. The building blends its historic charm with contemporary comforts.
