Fürstenhaus bzw. ehem. Rothschildsches Kinderasyl

The Fürstenhaus stands in the eastern part of Göstling’s village centre, a small town in the Scheibbs district of Lower Austria. Built as a mining official’s house in the 14th century, it later belonged to the Fürst family for more than a century. In 1878 Bettina Rothschild founded a home for the children of forestry workers, turning the building into a place of care. The house is a two-storey L-shaped block with a hipped roof added in the 17th century. Its façade is divided by giant pilasters and crowned with unusual stucco capitals. Inside, a central corridor runs beneath a cross-ribbed barrel vault, while the ground floor contains a pillared hall with a 17th-century groin vault and an 18th-century stucco ceiling. Visitors find a quiet courtyard behind the main entrance and rooms with historic iron grilles and stone portals. The oldest windows date from the early 1600s, and a 1693 boundary stone is built into the staircase. The building remains a reminder of Göstling’s past as a mining settlement and later as a site of social care.
