Klostergut Reinshof

The Klostergut Reinshof is an old monastic estate in southern Lower Saxony, split between the villages of Niedernjesa and Göttingen-Geismar. It sits beside the Leine valley road between Göttingen and Niedernjesa, its fields stretching into the flood plain of the Leine and Garte rivers. A quiet, flat landscape of meadows and arable land surrounds the farm buildings, with the Rosdorfer Baggersee just a few hundred metres to the west. The estate began as a grange for the Augustinian convent in Weende and became an independent farm in 1890. After 1980 the Klosterkammer Hannover leased it to the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen, which turned it into a research farm for agronomy and agricultural engineering. During the Second World War the estate housed more than seventy Polish and Soviet forced workers, living in three camps on site. A distinctive three-storey timber-framed dovecote from the 19th century still marks the farmyard. Visitors see the dovecote standing square on its flat roof, a reminder of the estate’s past. Inside the courtyard the university’s experimental plots and small glasshouse show modern field trials. The seminar building hosts lectures and workshops for students and researchers. Beyond the farm the Leine valley offers broad views across meadows and the river, while the nearby Baggersee provides a place for quiet walks beside the water.
