All Saints Church, Leigh
All Saints Church stands in Leigh, a small village in north Wiltshire. Built around 1250, it originally stood half a mile north of its present site. In 1896 the nave, porch and bell tower were carefully dismantled, each stone and timber marked to ensure correct rebuilding. The architect C.E. Ponting oversaw the move to a new site on Swan Lane, closer to the village. The old chancel remains in the original churchyard as All Saints Chancel, now a Grade II* listed building. The church’s history reflects both medieval craftsmanship and 19th-century determination to preserve it. The church is worth visiting for its remarkable survival and detailed craftsmanship. The porch, built in the late 14th century, still shows its original roof, handmade nails and a niche for a statue. The nave’s wooden roof beams are unusually elaborate for a parish church, with Jacobean carvings of heads and figures. An oak ceiling at the east end dates back to the 15th century, with delicate bosses added in 1638. Inscribed texts, including a verse from Colossians on the bell tower, add to its historical depth. The font, rescued from misuse as a cheese press, tells a story of recovery after the Commonwealth period. Visitors find a quiet, reflective space with many original features. The 18th-century pulpit and sounding board stand near pews thought to be 17th century. Fragments of medieval glass survive in a north window, and the three bells include one cast in 1450. The old chancel holds a finely carved 13th-century doorway and painted biblical texts from the 17th century. Though services are rare, the church remains a place of memory and craftsmanship, cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust.
