Ashton Keynes Castle

Ashton Keynes Castle stands in the quiet village of Ashton Keynes, close to Cricklade in Wiltshire. Known locally as The Battlefield, the site is a scheduled monument featuring a ringwork and bailey. The earthworks lie about 100 metres west of Kentend Farm, surrounded by farmland. The castle was founded in the 12th century by the Keynes family. Its remains include a strong outer wall above the ringwork and a spring-fed ditch lined with timber and clay. The castle’s history is tied to King Stephen’s capture of a fortification during the Anarchy. Archaeologist Derek Renn argued that this site, rather than South Cerney Castle, matches the description of the capture. Excavations led by G.M. Knocker uncovered floor tiles, glazed and unglazed pottery, and other artefacts from the early 12th to 13th centuries. These findings suggest the castle’s military use was brief before it became a manor. Visitors find earthworks that show the castle’s original layout. The ringwork and bailey are still visible, though the ruins appear worn. The site offers a glimpse into 12th-century fortification techniques. Nearby farmland and the village’s peaceful setting add to the atmosphere. The name The Battlefield hints at its past conflicts.
