Burg Dietenburg

The Burg Dietenburg was a hilltop stronghold built in the 14th century. It stands on a slope overlooking the Danube valley near Riedlingen. The site sits about 542 metres above sea level. A raised rectangular mound, two and a half metres high, is all that remains of the original motte. Archaeologists have partly damaged this mound during excavations. The surrounding ditch has long since been levelled. The Dietenburg first appears in records from 1364 under the name Dietenburgstall. It belonged to the local noble family, the Herren von Bossen. In 1441 the property passed to Zwiefalten Abbey. The abbey held the site until the Reformation changed its ownership. Today only faint traces mark where the wooden tower once stood. Visitors reach the quiet hilltop by following a short path from the edge of the forest. The view stretches across the wide Danube valley below. Wildflowers grow among the grassy slopes of the old mound. A simple information board explains what once stood on the spot. The peaceful setting offers a sense of how the place looked centuries ago.
