Lenzmoarkogel

The Lenzmoarkogel stands at 1,991 metres as the highest summit in the Gleinalpe range in Styria. It forms part of a tight semicircle of three peaks, with the Speikkogel 1,988 metres just three metres lower to the south and the Lärchkogel 1,894 metres further away to the north-east. The Speikkogel, though slightly lower, draws more walkers because the Central Alpine Way, the North-South Long-Distance Trail and the European E6 all share the same route across its top. Below the Speikkogel on its southern side sits the Gleinalm protective hut. A modest unnamed col at 1,973 metres separates the Lenzmoarkogel from the Speikkogel, while the Türkentörl saddle at 1,863 metres lies north below the summit. The name comes from an old distorted local term rather than any Turkish military history. From the Türkentörl a long ridge stretches north-west through the Wildeggkogel and Weiblofen peaks down to the Preggraben valley, a side of the Mur valley. To the east the Lenzmoarkogel drops steeply into the Kapellengraben, and to the west a smaller ridge descends toward the Gleingraben. On the ridge between Speikkogel and Lenzmoarkogel the Ochsenboden col holds a locked bivouac hut. The summit itself carries a cross and a rough stone windbreak. A thirty-minute detour from the Speikkogel along the shared long-distance trails brings walkers to the Lenzmoarkogel. The usual local route starts from Übelbach or Neuhof, follows forest tracks and the old alpine path to the Türkentörl in about three hours. Another direct line runs from the Almgasthof Spitzer in the Preggraben up the north-west ridge. From Hinterlobming in the north-east the mountain can be climbed via forest roads through the Kapellengraben and then unmarked paths across open ground.
