Wildeggkogel

The Wildeggkogel is a mountain in the eastern Alps, standing 1 485 metres above sea level in the Murtal district of Styria. It rises above rolling foothills that turn steeper toward the south-east, where rocky ridges appear. The nearest town, Knittelfeld, lies thirteen kilometres to the west, a quiet market town surrounded by farmland and forest. From the valley floor the climb follows paths through mixed woodland that gradually give way to alpine meadows. On clear days the summit rewards walkers with long views over the Mur valley and the lower hills beyond. The mountain is known for its quiet trails rather than dramatic faces or technical climbs. Local hikers favour the northern approach, which avoids the steeper southern gullies. The route passes old charcoal burners’ clearings where beech and spruce once supplied the ironworks of nearby villages. In autumn the slopes flush with copper and gold as larches turn before the oaks. The woodland is dense enough to shelter deer and capercaillie, though the birds are more often heard than seen. At the top a modest summit cross marks the highest point, its shadow stretching eastward across the valley. A broad wooden bench faces north, giving a place to rest while the wind moves through the spruce tops below. On the eastern side the ground drops away in a series of shallow terraces once used for summer grazing. The path continues along the ridge, offering glimpses of distant peaks when the morning mist lifts. By late afternoon the light turns honey-coloured, turning the grassy slopes into a warm carpet before the final descent.
