Schloss Tabor

Schloss Tabor stands in Neuhaus am Klausenbach, a village in Burgenland near the borders with Hungary and Slovenia. Its hakenförmiger Grundriss—a hooked floor plan—dates from 1469 when Ulrich Pessnitzer built it as a stronghold. The Batthyány family took possession in 1607 and used it as a refuge when the old castle at Neuhaus decayed. During the Thirty Years’ War, Protestant refugees from Styria found shelter here. In the 17th century the building was remodelled in the Baroque style. The castle remained a centre of estate administration for centuries and later became housing for estate workers. It was continuously inhabited until 1964, making it the oldest inhabited building in the Jennersdorf district. After 2019 the Burgenland government bought the property from the Batthyánys, who had leased it to the Rupprecht family. Restoration work in 2002–03 repaired the two-storey arcaded courtyard, which now hosts summer opera performances and other events. The round tower still displays its original coat of arms. Inside, visitors find a Heurigen-Restaurant serving local wine and food. The arcades frame a sheltered courtyard perfect for summer evenings. The round tower with its carved heraldic panel offers a quiet spot to look across the surrounding countryside. Beyond the castle walls lie meadows and woodlands that belong to the Dreiländer-Naturpark Raab, a cross-border protected area.
