Pen y Gurnos round barrow

Pen y Gurnos is a Bronze Age round barrow near the village of Llanddewi Brefi in Ceredigion. It stands on open farmland as a low, grass-covered mound about fourteen metres wide. The site carries the number CD253 on Cadw’s list of scheduled ancient monuments. It belongs to a group of nearly four hundred similar burial mounds in Wales, most of which were raised between 2400 and 1500 BC. These earthen heaps were part of burial customs that began around 3000 BC and continued until the end of the Bronze Age. Bronze Age people built them for ceremonies or to cover the remains of the dead. Visitors find a simple grassy rise with no fences or railings, set among ploughed fields and hedgerows. The horizon stretches for many kilometres across rolling countryside. From the top of the barrow the view takes in the valley of the River Teifi and the hills beyond. The site is quiet, with only the sound of wind and distant farm machinery.
