Chelsea and Westminster Hospital

Chelsea and Westminster Hospital stands on the site of the former St Stephen’s Hospital in Chelsea, London. The original infirmary opened in 1878 and became a large municipal hospital with 788 beds by 1930. Miss E J Booth served as matron from 1911 to 1942, overseeing care during two world wars. After joining the NHS in 1948, the old hospital closed in 1989, though its HIV unit still operates as the St Stephen’s Centre. The present building, designed by Sheppard Robson, opened in 1993 and brought together services from five London hospitals. The hospital is now a leading teaching and research centre linked to Imperial College London. It houses the largest specialist HIV unit in Europe and the core laboratory of the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative. A specialist hand surgery unit treats complex trauma cases, while Radio Chelsea and Westminster provides music and company to patients. The chapel on the first floor holds historic treasures, including a 16th-century Veronese painting and stained glass from earlier hospitals. CW+, the hospital’s charity, funds new equipment and an art programme featuring works by Tracey Emin and Damien Hirst. Visitors find a modern hospital with quiet courtyards and bright public areas. The chapel offers a place for reflection, while the art displays change along the main corridors. Staff and patients often mention the calm atmosphere despite the busy services. The hospital radio studio sits on the second floor, broadcasting live programmes to bedsides and online. Nearby, the St Stephen’s Centre continues to provide specialist HIV care.
