Schleinzerkreuz, Walpersbach

The Schleinzer-Kreuz stands in the rolling hills of Lower Austria, a stone wayside shrine topped by a carved crucifix and sheltered by a tiny wooden chapel. The structure belongs to the parish church of Mariä Himmelfahrt in Walpersbach, giving it a quiet spiritual presence among farmland and forests. A nearby hamlet now bears the same name, linking the place to local life. The chapel was built in 1800 when Count Hoyos of Frohsdorf provided the funds for the original wooden shelter. Both the cross and the chapel were carefully restored in 2000 and 2001 to keep their simple form intact. The design shows how rural devotion was organised in the 19th century, when noble patrons often supported local shrines. Visitors find a plain wooden chapel with a tiled roof held up by four posts, standing beside a tall stone cross. Inside the chapel a small bench allows a moment of rest and reflection. The surrounding fields stretch away under the wide sky, making the spot feel both sheltered and open. The restored shrine keeps its original character, offering a glimpse of past piety without ornament.
