Burg Lanzenkirchen

The ruins of Lanzenkirchen Castle stand in the Leitha valley near Walpersbach in Lower Austria. Built in the early 12th century as a water fortress, it once guarded the southern bank of the river. By the 16th century the structure had fallen into decay and today only earthworks remain. Archaeologists uncovered medieval layers from the 12th to 15th centuries during digs in 1977, 1988–89 and 1992. The finds confirmed the site’s long occupation and strategic importance. A slight rise marks the former keep, while low ramparts trace the outline of the outer defences. No standing masonry survives above ground. Visitors walk over grassy hummocks that outline the castle’s footprint. The quiet riverside setting contrasts with the site’s vanished past. A low ridge on the east side shows where the outer walls once stood. The Leitha flows nearby, recalling the water that once surrounded the fortress.
