The Mount, Shrewsbury

The Mount is a Georgian house in Shrewsbury where Charles Darwin was born. It stands as a fine example of early 19th-century architecture, built in 1800 by his father Robert Darwin, a respected local doctor. The house remained in the family until 1848, when Robert Darwin died there, followed by his daughters. After the family left, it was sold at auction in 1850. Today the building is grade II* listed and occupied by the District Valuer’s office. The house reflects the neoclassical style popular in the period, with red brick walls and five symmetrical bays. A large portico with Doric pillars marks the entrance, and sash windows with brick surrounds line the three main storeys. The attic sits below a low-pitched roof without dormers, topped by a simple stone cornice. Its design shows the influence of Georgian taste while remaining firmly rooted in local tradition. Inside, visitors find a well-preserved Georgian interior with original features such as the central staircase and panelled rooms. The central bay above the portico contains a prominent window that lights the main hall. Though not open as a museum, the house remains a place where Darwin’s early life can be imagined. Its quiet setting near Mountfields adds to the sense of stepping back into the early 1800s.
