St Chad's Church, Shrewsbury

St Chad’s Church stands in Shrewsbury beside the Quarry, a long green park by the River Severn. The present building, with its round shape and tall tower, replaced an earlier church in 1792 and is now a Grade I listed landmark. The motto above its doors reads ‘open doors, open hearts, and open minds’. Charles Darwin was baptised here in 1809 and attended as a boy with his mother Susannah. The church belongs to the Greater Churches Group and welcomes visitors from the town and beyond. The earlier church on College Hill dated back to Saxon times and may have begun in a royal palace of the 500s. By 1086 it was a well-endowed parish recorded in the Domesday Book. A partly Saxon crypt was uncovered in 1889, its slender pillars cut with an axe and still visible today. The old church held monuments to John Weaver, father of English ballet, and a peal of ten bells. Its churchyard had risen over centuries until it reached the window sills, making the floor damp. Inside the current building, light falls through clear windows onto plain walls. The round plan gives every seat a clear view of the central space. Outside, the tower rises above lime trees and the Quarry’s riverside paths. A small chapel and the exposed crypt mark the site of the first church, now quiet beside the flowing Severn.
