Filbert Street

Filbert Street was a football stadium in Leicester, England. It stood on a narrow street just south of the city centre. The ground opened in 1891 and became the long-time home of Leicester City F.C. For more than a century it shaped the club’s identity and hosted thousands of matches. The stadium’s record crowd of 47,298 watched a 1928 FA Cup tie against Tottenham Hotspur. It also staged two FA Cup semi-finals and several marathon cup replays. In the 1990s it gained an all-seater capacity of 21,500 after major rebuilding. The Carling Stand, completed in 1993, brought modern facilities to the ground before the club moved to a new stadium in 2002. Visitors today find the site redeveloped as a residential area. A row of modern houses now occupies the pitch area. A small memorial garden marks the old centre circle, and a plaque recalls the ground’s history. The surrounding streets still carry the names Walnut Street and Filbert Street, keeping the memory alive.
