Welford Road Stadium

Welford Road Stadium stands in Leicester between Aylestone Road and Welford Road, on the southern edge of the city centre. Opened in 1892, it is the home ground of Leicester Tigers and the largest purpose-built club rugby union stadium in England. The ground has grown through two main periods of development: stands were added on both sides before and after the First World War, and then between 1995 and 2016 the ends and the north side were rebuilt. It has hosted five full England matches and two Rugby World Cup games. The stadium is worth the journey for its long history and modern facilities. The Members’ Stand and Crumbie Stand date from the early 20th century, while the East Stand was built in 1995 and the North Stand opened in 2009. The ground’s capacity now reaches 25,849, with the North Stand holding 10,000 spectators and a 1,000-seat hospitality suite. The West Stand, completed in 2016, replaced the original 1909 clubhouse and added 2,917 seats. Visitors find a mix of historic and new stands surrounding the pitch. The North Stand, East Stand and West Stand all offer modern seating, while the Breedon Stand on the south side retains its early 20th-century character. The ground sits between two roads, with the city centre just beyond, and the stands frame a clear view of the playing area. The Final Whistle bar on the ground floor of the North Stand is open to all on match days.
