Holzschnitt-Museum

The Holzschnitt-Museum stands in Öschingen, a district of Mössingen in the Tübingen region. It occupies a half-timbered former town hall built in 1700. The building now houses the Kunststiftung Klaus Herzer, a collection dedicated to the art and craft of relief printing. The museum grew from Klaus Herzer’s experiments in wood and metal printmaking. In 2000 he proposed creating a permanent display, and the museum opened the following year. It holds around 1 800 prints, printing blocks, wood sculptures and monotypes. Visitors can see a Grieshaber press and an Andruck press in action. Guided tours introduce the techniques behind woodcut and related processes. The ‘Öschinger Museumsgespräche’ bring artists, musicians, theologians and scholars to discuss the art. Concerts and collaborative printing sessions let visitors join in. A local support group works to keep the museum lively and welcoming.
