Burg Talheim

Burg Talheim stands where the later Schloss Talheim now rises, in the suburb of Talheim, part of Mössingen in the Tübingen region. Once a water-filled fortress, it belonged to the Schenken von Talheim, vassals of the Counts of Zollern. Only faint traces remain: a low mound and the outline of its defensive ditch. The site lies beside the present-day Schloss, a quiet reminder of the medieval past. The surrounding landscape is gentle, rolling Swabian countryside. The vanished water defences once made the castle hard to approach. Historians recognise the site from old records and local guides. Wolfgang Willig describes the vanished castle in his study of noble houses in Baden-Württemberg. Günter Schmitt’s walking guide for the Swabian Alb also records the site between Reutlingen and Spaichingen. These sources place the castle clearly in the landscape of the 14th century. The mound and ditch are all that survive of its once strong walls. The place invites a pause to picture how it looked when the Schenken held sway. Visitors today see a modest grassy rise beside the modern Schloss. A shallow hollow marks where the moat once held water. The setting is peaceful, with views across vineyards and fields. The vanished fortress is easy to overlook, yet it tells part of Mössingen’s story. The remains are small, but they connect the present with the age of castles and counts.
